Facial muscles are used repeatedly throughout our lifetime, causing the skin to crease in areas of greatest use. The ageing process causes collagen and elastin production in the skin to reduce, so as we get older these areas of overuse become damaged and the lines become permanent.
CSC uses Allergan’s® Botulinum Toxin A injections (BOTOX®), which have been available since 1989 and used in over 66 countries. It is a popular anti-ageing treatment used to prevent the formation of wrinkles and to soften existing lines, taking effect within 5 - 14 days.
Popular areas for treatment are the frown lines between the eyes, crow’s feet or smile lines and the forehead.
How do they work?
By injecting safe doses of Botulinum Toxin A, the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines are reduced as the targeted muscles relax over a period of 5 - 14 days.
Wrinkle relaxing treatments work only on the specific muscles injected, leaving surrounding muscles to function as usual maintaining normal facial expression.
The results are a smoother, younger-looking appearance which lasts for 3 to 6 months.
As a preventative measure wrinkle relaxing injections work by relaxing the targeted muscles preventing the skin from creasing and reducing the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Over time the benefits of this treatment become more impressive.
Wrinkle relaxing injections can be combined with other treatments such as facial peels and fillers to make your skin look even younger and brighter.
Are there any reasons that I cannot have Wrinkle relaxing injections? - Yes.
- Local skin inflammation or infection
- Pregnancy or breast feeding
- Egg allergies
- Medications – aminoglycoside antibiotics e.g. Gentamicin, streptomycin
- Neuro-muscular disorders such as myasthenia Gravis and Lou Gehring’s disease
Procedure for Botulinum Toxin A injections
Having completed relevant paperwork and consent the entire treatment takes about 15 minutes.
You will be asked to frown, smile and raise your eyebrows so that the facial muscles to be injected can be clearly identified.
The skin is then cleansed and the Wrinkle relaxing Injections are placed directly into the muscle areas which you have decided to have treated.
An extremely fine needle is used and most clients experience only minimal discomfort, if at all.
Arnica Gel is applied to the skin post treatment to aid reduction of any potential bruising.
You will start to see the effects develop slowly over the following week to 14 days, resulting in the lines visibly decreasing.
Following the treatment there may be minimal redness at the injection sites and bruising may develop but this is uncommon. Most clients continue with their normal day without anybody noticing.
It is important not to massage or rub the areas after treatment so we advise you not to have a facial or do vigorous exercise. We also recommend that you remain upright for 3-4 hours after your treatment.
It is advised to book a follow up appointment in 2 weeks with your clinician.
Side effects of line and wrinkle treatments are rare as the correct injection technique will be used and it is one of the safest cosmetic procedures available. However, it is possible for some of the toxin to disperse into an adjacent muscle which can cause a temporary weakness such as drooping of the upper eyelid or brow. These effects are temporary and usually resolve after 1- 6 weeks.
Over time our skin gradually loses volume creating a tired, aged appearance.
Dermal fillers are a popular treatment with both women and men of all ages who are seeking to replace lost volume, enhance lip shape or to reduce the appearance of fine lines, as over time our skin gradually loses volume creating a tired, aged appearance.
As a result of ageing or smoking our lips become smaller and can develop fine lines around their borders. The cupids bow can become flattened and the corners of the mouth may turn downward.
Dermal filler treatments are particularly suitable for the lower face and lips.
The naso-labial lines (between the nose and mouth), marionette lines (around the mouth), smile lines around the eyes and cheeks and chin indentations can all be treated.
CSC use Allergan’s® dermal filler product range Juvėderm Ultra™ and their latest generation of fillers Vycross collection.
These are hyaluronic acid based fillers formulated to restore hydration and plumpness to the skin, which are lost with age. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in humans. In its treatment form it is a gel-like solution which is injected into the skin and locks moisture in.
Smoother and fuller looking skin is instantly achieved by targeting the lines between the nose and mouth (naso-labial lines), the mouth (marionette lines), smile lines, indentations on the chin and cheeks, supporting the skin, giving a smoother and fuller look instantly.
Lips can be redefined and volume added.
This treatment can be completed within half an hour. Total appointment time 1 hour.
For lips a local anaesthetic cream is applied for 20 – 30 minutes prior to the treatment.
The effects of Dermal Filler treatments usually lasts for 6-12 months and clients normally have top-ups when they feel the effect is starting to wear off. Often with repeated treatments the effects can last longer. As hyaluronic acid is naturally broken down in the body results gradually diminish. Wrinkles, lip definition and fullness to the skin will gradually return to how it was prior to treatment if not repeated.
How do they work?
Dermal fillers aim to add volume to the skin by having a ‘plumping’ effect. This is similar to younger skin and results in a fuller, more youthful appearance.
Our skin acts as a protective barrier against loss of moisture from our tissues and cells and the environment and is made up of two layers, the epidermis and the dermis.
The dermis is directly below the epidermis containing the structures such as nerves and hair follicles. It also contains collagen needed to give the skin strength and elasticity.
As we age the production of collagen slows down and any existing collagen is less effective, which is why as we age our skin becomes thinner and more fragile.
Are Dermal Filler Injections Safe?
Allergan’s products used by CSC have been proven to be effective and side effects are rare.
Dermal Filler Procedure
In order to discuss the look you wish to achieve, a pre-treatment consultation with the nurse is completed. You will be advised which dermal filler will be most effective at helping you reach your goals. If you decide to precede a detailed recording of your medical history and careful examination of your face is completed. The procedure will take between 15 and 30 minutes depending upon the areas to be injected and results immediate. After the procedure there is no reason for you not to continue with your normal day as planned.
Having cleaned the skin, the dermal filler is gently injected. Arnica gel may be applied if bruising occurs.
It is advised not to touch the treated are for 48 hours to reduce risk of infection and let the filler settle.
Do not have facials, peels, similar treatments or expose the skin to strong sunlight for 2-3 days A follow up appointment in 2 weeks for a review with the clinician is recommended.
Common side effects include bleeding and discomfort at the injection site, redness, bruising and swelling locally.
Bruising and swelling will spontaneously resolve.
All common and uncommon side effects will be discussed with you by the nurse prior to you giving your consent for the treatment.
Hyalase, which is naturally occurring can be used after 2 weeks and can break down filler if you have a bad reaction or result.
Reported media stories have shown poor outcomes for some celebrities’ including Leslie Ash, but the product used was liquid silicone, which is no longer used today in Aesthetics.
Chemical Peels are designed to accelerate the removal of old, dead skin cells at the surface of the skin to promote new cell growth. There are different strengths of peels, resulting in a superficial, medium, or deep removal of the old skin. The appearance of sagging skin, sun damaged skin, fine lines, mild acne scarring and oubreaks can all be reduced as peels can lift and firm, reduce pigmentation and enhance skin clarity and texture.
CSC use top scientifically developed peels and products, which improve and refine the condition of your facial skin with clinically proven efficacy. The companies have an excellent worldwide reputation. The peels used are naturally occurring fruit or nut acids, extracts of sugar cane or synthetically made. With regular use they can create similar results to Trichloroacetic Acid or Retinoic Peels.
Lighter peels are not indicated for the treatment of deeper wrinkles, scars and lines.
With all types of peels home care products are recommended to ensure that your skin is prepared and is in its best condition prior to the peel. For this reason you are advised to make an appointment at least 2 weeks before you would like a facial peel. After care such as sun screen and moisturisers are also recommended post peel.
How does it work?
The technique of applying a peel solution to the face exfoliates the skin, causing the dead skin cells and superficial layers of your skin to slough and eventually peel off allowing the formation of new outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum).
Are peels Safe?
As a lighter peel they are generally safer to use and result in minimal downtime as there is less risk of over peeling or reddening of the skin.
In order to discuss the look you wish to achieve, a pre-treatment consultation with the nurse is completed. You will be advised which peel will be most effective at helping you reach your goals. If you decide to precede a detailed recording of your medical history and careful examination of your face is completed. The peel and skin care advice you will receive is balanced to create the best peel results for you with as low as possible an incidence of any potential side effects.
Your skin will be cleansed – it is advised not to wear large amounts of make up on the day. Sensitive areas of your face will be protected with Vaseline and eye shields. Oils removed from the skin. The peel applied for recommended time and then neutralised. Moisturiser and SPF 50 creams applied. The procedure takes about half an hour depending on the peel used.
Effects can be seen from 1 – 2 weeks and a course of 4- 6 peels is recommended to optimise results from 2 weeks post peel.
Post peel it is vital that you protect your skin from the damage that UVA and UVB rays cause by using a sufficient sun screen (UVA/UVB sunblock), as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun's rays which may result in burning, increased pigmentation and uneven skin tone. The nurse will recommend home care products designed to work in harmony with the peels you are having and for this reason it is advised to follow the skin care routine discussed.
Please do not touch or rub the treated areas. You may gently apply mineral make-up post treatment, or apply your normal makeup once any redness has calmed. Avoid extreme temperature changes completely.
Side effects are rare and mild in nature, and are normally a direct result of the effect of the peel. For example itching can be caused by the renewal of new skin cells taking place. This can be relieved by the use of a cold compress to soothe the skin or an antihistamine from local pharmacy or supermarket. Try not to scratch as this may result in further damage to the skin and may result in an infection.
